Western Tanager status

The NC Bird Records Committee is not reviewing records of the Western
Tanager. There are perhaps 20-30 records of the species in NC, mostly
from the coastal plain in the winter. There are probably more records
from feeders in the C.P. than elsewhere, which makes the recent report
from Fayetteville quite plausible, as long as the more likely Baltimore
Oriole was ruled out.

I am a bit surprised that little interest among NC birders has arisen
over this report. Has everyone seen a Western Tanager who is working on
a state list? I've seen a couple -- Wanchese years ago, and a couple of
times at Kitty Kosh's feeder in Wilmington.
