My wife and I are getting ready for our third annual winter trip
to the Outer Banks. This time we hope to have time to stop at some
places we have only driven by in the past. One of those places is
Alligator River.
I have a copy of Fussell's book, which we'll carry with us in
the car. Today I reread the section on Alligator River and have,
therefore, an idea or two. However, up-to-date information is
always useful, so if anyone can suggest specific sites to visit at
this time of year, I'll appreciate the leads.
Another target for a stop this year is Phelps Lake at Pettigrew
State Park. Some weeks ago Harry LeGrand reported a large flock of
common mergansers there. Has anyone been there since Harry's report?
Common mergansers are still on my search list but if the birds have
left the lake, there isn't much use in making that side trip.
Bob
