My wife and I feed only a 50-50 mix of black oil sunflower seed and
sunflower hearts. We usually have a large flock of goldfinches at our
feeders. It is true that there are fewer this year than most. Also we
have never seen our bluebirds feed on our suet cakes but only on the
sunflower hearts. In fact, the birds raised in our yard boxes are
brought to the feeders by the adults and are taught to eat the hearts.
So I think it is true that we are changing the habits of some of our birds.
