HBSP, 1/21



Hi y'all,
    Made my first trip to HBSP this year today, accompanied by Miles
Phillips. While there, we ran into Steve Compton and birded away the day. I
had hoped to get a few waterfowl and shorebirds for the year. That's what I
got, too; just a few. But every one counts...
Common Loon - 6
P-b Grebe - 4
N. Gannet - 2
Brown Pelican - 5
Great Cormorant - 3
D-c Cormorant - 15
Great Blue Heron - 6
Great Egret - 2
Snowy Egret - 1
Tricolored Heron - 3
Black-crowned Night-Heron - 1
White Ibis - ~ 100 (two nice flocks, one headed south just about sunset.
Very nice.)
Green-winged Teal - 4
Gadwall - 6
Am. Wigeon - 12
Canvasback - 4
Redhead - 30 (22 in one flock)
Ring-necked - 6
Bufflehead - 4
Hooded Merganser - 20
Red-breasted merganser - 25
Ruddy Duck - 5
Turkey Vulture - 3
Bald Eagle - 1 adult
N. Harrier - 1
Am . Coot - 20
Black-bellied Plover - 3
Semipalmated Plover - 10
Piping Plover - 11 (2 banded inds.)
Killdeer - 4
Gr. Yellowlegs - 1 (at causeway)
L. Yellowlegs - 1  (jetty pools)
Willet - 4
Ruddy Turnstone - 12
Sanderling - 6
Purple Sandpiper - 30+
Dunlin - 15
S-b Dowitcher - 2
Bonaparte's Gull - 20+ (one beginning to show distinct hood; watched it
until it flew along  with other Bonies, just to make sure)
Ring-billed Gull - yeah, there were some
Herring Gull - uh-huh, adults and imm.
Forster's Tern - 1
Mourning Dove - 2
Common Ground Dove - 1
Am. Crow - 1
Crow sp. - 4
Carolina Wren - 1
Marsh Wren - 1
G-c Kinglet - ~6 (near the start of Sandpiper Trail, foraging low)
R-c Kinglet - a few
Hermit Thrush - 1
Am. Robin - 1
N. Mockingbird - 2
Loggerhead Shrike - 2 (behind north dunes)
Yellow-rumped Warbler - yeah, there were a few
N. Cardinal - 3
E. Towhee - 1
Savannah Sparrow - plenty (behind the dunes)
Song Sp. - 1
Swamp Sp. - 3
White-throated Sp. - a few
R-w Blackbird - 30+
E. Meadowlark - 8
Boat-tailed Grackle - 7
