Re: Baltimore Oriole back again

Shelley and all,

Cecropia trees are common tropical trees
(certainly in the tropics of this hemispere -
I don't know about elsewhere). They are often
the first to colonize treefall gaps, roadsides
and other disturbed areas, and produce large
quantities of fruit that attract mixed
foraging flocks of tanagers, warblers, euphonias
and yes, both Baltimore and orchard orioles.
Some also have extrafloral nectaries where ants
can feed on nectar, and the ants protect the tree
from herbivores in classic mutualistic fashion.
