Just across Old Oxford Highway from the prison north
of Durham, they have put in a new trail and
impoundment area. There is a great blue heronry in a
swamp right across a river from the new trail that is
clearly visible. This is an old heronry but it used
to be a long walk along a dirt trail to get to it.
I might normally think, "how nice I can see the
heronry now" but when I visited this morning, I found
a great deal of vegetation damage from off-road
vehicles, probably ATVs. This was done within the last
two weeks. They drove over a low dirt hill, bypassing
the fence blocking the trail opening, and drove over
most of the grass that wasnt underwater. A small
grassy space, very close to the nearest heron nests,
was torn completely to mud. I wonder if the noise will
drive the herons away (not to mention the fact that
off-roading also often includes guns- and herons are
nice big targets)
Does anybody know how much disturbance herons will
tolerate before moving off?
