Tracy and I visited Ft. Bragg, NC this morning for our annual RCWP outing. We
usually go in February for the simple reason that not much else is going on at
this time of year birding wise. I'm sure April-May are even better times to
visit, but we are usually out looking for migrants. As in the past, the birds
were cooperative and we did not have to wait long or walk far from the car to
see several. The most interesting observation this year was the apparent
courtship behavior we witnessed. One bird, the presumed male, chased another
bird, the presumed female, and performed a wing lifting display while vocalizing
with a sharp chatter. The pair moved around quite a bit, but remained in
earshot most of the visit. The wing lifting was repeated several times. The
usual fleet of Pine Warblers and Brown Headed Nuthatches accompanied the group
of RCWP's.
The Ft. Bragg site we visit is on Gruber Road near the Rod & Gun Club. From the
north take NC 24 to Spring Lake and turn right on Butner Rd. at the entrance to
Ft. Bragg. Follow Bunter to the dead end at Gruber. Take a right on Gruber
and proceed past the obstacle course to the Rod and Gun Club. There is a small
park on the right and a shooting range on the left. Marked cavity trees
surround the area. Sundays are best as the shooting range is less active
(closed?).
Have a great week!
