Yesterday I heard what I thought was fish crows on the college
campus. Later I heard and observed a single crow and thought
"maybe." When I got to the office this morning about 7:30, I
observed and listened to four crows that were making the
characteristic "cah-hah" double syllable of fish crows. A few
minutes later I found a message from a colleague in my voice mail.
She had heard fish crows when she left to go home yesterday evening.
So, the fish crows are back after an extended absence. My last
log report for fish crows on the campus in 2000 was October 20.
Their first day back appears to be February 27. My guess is they
come up the Cape Fear River, which forms the eastern boundary of the
college property.
