Subject: Cerulean Survey Participant Announcement

The Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina
is looking for experienced birders who can share their expertise with us
on the Roanoke River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has received
funds to determine the status of the cerulean warbler population on the
coastal plain floodplain habitat of the Roanoke River. Birders must be
comfortable with identifying the song of the cerulean warbler. Travel
($0.34/mile), lodging (up to $50./night) and per diem ($30./day) will be
covered for all qualified participants.

The survey will begin May 12, 2001 and finish up the morning of the 13th.
Most of you will have to leave the 13th to return to your jobs on Monday.
That's OK. The two days of help will be appreciated. Those of you who
can help the 14 th are encouraged to stick around so we can cover more
area if necessary. We will work in pairs. There will be guides available
for those not familiar with the Roanoke system. Saturday the 12th is the
last day of the turkey hunt so we will be restricted to boats. Sunday we
will conduct surveys by foot along creeks and guts. Play back devices
will be used when necessary to get responses. In addition, as long as
we are all out there, data on other high priority bird species will be
collected i.e. Swainson's and Kentucky warblers, Mississippi kite, bald
eagle etc.

If you are interested in this birding adventure please contact the
project coordinator Jean Richter, Refuge Wildlife Biologist at 252/794-
3808 or jean_richter@fws.gov

Looking forward to hearing from you.
