More On The SC Limpkin

Carolinabirders,

As stated on earlier posts, yesterday (1 March 2001) Giff Beaton and
Tom Egan from GA found and photographed a Limpkin at Savannah
NWR. The bird was found along the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive, about mile
0.9 in from the parking lot. This is at a sharp (90 degree) right turn, just
before the popular fishing area at the water control trunk structure. It is
difficult to describe here where the bird was, but from the middle of the
curve of the road, it was about 50 feet out from the road on the left. The
bird was in and out of the taller grasses, walking around on the mats of
green vegetation.

Several birders arrived at the Refuge around 3:00 PM and the bird was
not seen until 5:40 PM. It walked out of the taller grasses and stood out
in the open and preened. It would retreat to the taller grasses and in
about 5 to 10 minutes would return. The bird was observed until 6:15 PM,
when birders left the area. From Giff’s description of where they had it
earlier that morning, the bird appeared to be in the same spot.

Thanks to Giff and Tom for locating the bird and getting the word out
immediately (they called me from their cell phone while looking at the
bird). Also thanks to those that posted the information for me on
Carolinabirds.

I do not think Giff and Tom found the White-faced Ibis or the Cinnamon
Teal. Birders there that afternoon did not look for either of those birds.

I will be in this evening (Friday) if you have any questions.

Good luck!
