40,000 and Counting!

HI . . .

Yesterday (5 February 2002)--thanks to the arrival of a long-awaited
flock of American Goldfinches--I finally banded my 40,000th bird at
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History since 1982. (A photo
of the illustrious bird will appear in the next installment of "This
Week at Hilton Pond.")

As you might guess, 17,576 (43.9%) of the individuals from 123
species banded have been one of the four "winter finches" (House
Finch, Purple Finch, American Goldfinch, and Pine Siskin).

I guess I'll shoot for 50,000 after all! :-)

Happy Nature Watching!
