Hello, this is a February 28 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
CINNAMON TEAL
ROSS' GEESE
THAYER'S GULL
CALIFORNIA GULL
EARED GREBE
The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE at Southport, NC is still present and coming to food.
From Southport take Hwy. 211 toward the Southport- Fort Fisher ferry
terminal. When 211 turns right to go to the ferry, stay straight. The road
will end. Turn right on Shepherd Rd. Go about 1/3 mile, look for a patch of
tall weeds on the left. An area has been cleared for birdseed . Watch this
area for the Towhee. Early AM is best to see this bird. After 10:30 the bird
becomes tougher to find.
An adult male CINNAMON TEAL is still present at Savannah NWR in SC.
Two ROSS' GEESE were present near Santee NWR in SC on 2-23. Previously these
birds were present at the refuge but apparently wander off. On the 23rd they
were in fields near a marina . This is all the information given to the RBA.
Birders on the Outer Banks should check the gulls at Cape Point. On 2-17
adult THAYER'S and CALIFORNIA GULLS were present . An EARED GREBE has been
reported from the surf around the point recently.
Thanks this week to Chuck Hocevar, Jerry Wineberger, Scott Baron and Curtis
Smalling for their calls and reports. Some of this information was gleaned
from Carolinabirds.
