Hello, this is a March 12 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

THICK-BILLED MURRE
RAZORBILLS
DOVEKIES
RED-NECKED GREBES

Alcids continue to be the news in the Carolinas. The highlight thus far is a
THICK-BILLED MURRE currently being seen at Fort Macon SP at Atlantic Beach ,
NC. This bird was easily seen 3-11 and today 3-12 by many observers. Look
around the rock jetty or even well into the inlet for the THICK-BILLED MURRE.

RAZORBILLS continue to be frequently reported; mostly by birders searching
for the murre. Up to 70 birds were seen from the Triple Ess Pier at Atlantic
Beach on 3-9, 10 birds were in Beaufort Inlet on 3-9; and a DOVEKIE was a
fly-by at the Fort Macon bathhouse on 3-9. Birders anywhere along the coasts
of North and South Carolina should spend some time ocean-watching for any of
these species or more!

Numerous reports of RED-NECKED GREBES have been received in the last week. A
grebe has been at the Oregon Inlet Marina since 3-1. Inland reports of this
species in NC have come from Lake Hickory (Oxford Access Area), Falls Lake ,
and Jordan Lake. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in SC at Port Royal from the
Port Royal Boardwalk Park. Go to the end of Paris Avenue in Port Royal.

Thanks this week to Jeff Pippen, John Fussell, Bruce Smithson , Randy Newman,
for their calls and reports. Some of this information was gleaned from
Carolinabirds.
