Facebook acquired the mobile messaging company Beluga back in March of this year. Since then Facebook has been working on their competitor to Google Plus Huddle which provides a similar service — easy quick group messaging. Since Huddle isn’t available on the iPhone as yet, Facebook took the advantage today as it announced Beluga rebranded with some improvements as Facebook Messenger.
The release is interestingly coincides with reports that use of RIM Blackberry BBM has outstripped the use of Facebook and Twitter — in the London riots (only).
I’ve had Beluga on my phone but not done too much with it (running txt thru Google Voice to save charges ;->). Looking to download Messenger now. Let me know if you’ve found and are trying it. At the moment, https://www.facebook.com/mobile/messenger says “Messenger will be available soon. Please check back later.”
