More Mini than Mini – the SmartCar

SmartCar at MOMA
When I was in Granada last month, I was amazed by a very little 2 seat car that was all over the city. The SmartCar only takes up about half a parking space and is extremely fuel effecient.

Now AP (via NYTimes) tells us that DaimlerChrysler is bringing the SmartCar to the USA.

Let’s see 60K miles and 5 years on my PT. Hmmmm.

I really hope this catches on, but how would it be on the highway weaving in and out of the big rigs and SUVs?

The SmartCar is smart about safety too. See the “But is it safe?” section of this MSNBC article and this video of a crash test from Auto Motor und Sport. The SmartCar has a complete reinforced stainless steel frame that acts like a “walnut shell” to protect the meaty nuts inside. And it’s not new; the SmartCar has been in production and use in Europe for a decade.

The Smart Cars are already available in the US from ZAP http://www.zapworld.com ZP (NYSE). A California based company who imports, retrofits, and then distributes the Smart Cars to their dealers. Zap is also planning on bringing a Brazilian made car to the US, the Obvio! 828, that is a hybrid that can run on any combination of ethanol and gas. Zap is also the only car company who is selling a Chinese manufactured car in the US the 100% electric Xebra city car .
