Good site: www.allmusic.com
All Music-Guide is a commercial Web site. Though the main page is simple in appearance, the site - and what it offers - is incredible: a continuously developing database of musical history. It's well organized, intuitive, clear and concise. As an example, if one were to type The Beatles into the search box, the resulting screen produces links to everything from every album the group created, to every group created in the same year it formed (1960.) There are extended lists of links to related artists, to the group's influences, to other groups that have covered its music. And finally, the site lists an exhaustive bibliography.
Bad site: www.rock.com
The site is divided into four frames, each containing some form of animation. The main page and its links break just about every rule of good design: no immediately apparent purpose, overuse of technology, bad color schemes, nauseating use of animation. Thankfully, the site will not exist as is for long; Soundstone.com - a commercial Web site designed to sell music and offer editorial content - has purchased the domain name and will be replacing this mess soon.
Take care,
