the good, the bad and the...

THE GOOD

I found two websites that I thought were particularly well designed.
The first can be viewed by going to http://www.doubletakemagazine.org.
Doubletake is an excellent magazine which comes out only once every
season. (As in, there is a "Fall" issue, a "Spring" issue, and so
on...) I believe it is affiliated with Duke University somehow, and is
printed in Durham. At any rate, their website is simple, yet
aesthetically pleasing; concise, and yet packed with information.

The second website I considered "good" was the one for John Fluevog
shoes. People in search of really funky shoes (guys or girls) should
check this website out (http://www.fluevog.com/). Again, it is
simple in design. Since one of the purposes of this website is to
increase customer awareness of a flasy commercial product, one would
think the designers of the page would go crazy with graphics. Not so
here. I think that the information about the company and its products
are well-balanced. The site is also easy to navigate.

THE BAD

The first website that I consider HORRIBLE can be found by instructing
your browser to go to http://www.arch-mag.com/welcome.html. This is
an on-line magazine devoted to the subject of architecture around the
world. You would think that a magazine geared toward design-conscious
individuals such as architects would be better designed. Well. Just
go to this sight and let the confustion begin. It is a convoluted
jumble of information (mostly in red, black, and white), and I never
know where the links are taking me exactly. In addition to that, the
site is quite "ugly."

The runner-up in my website jeers can be found at
http://bluemagazine.org/. This is a magazine that can be bought in
stores, and is geared toward the young, or young at heart, adventure
traveler. I realize it is a new magazine...but their website makes me
wonder why they even bothered to create one in the first place. It is
quite devoid of information....(where are the online articles to tease
the consumer into going to a store and purchasing the magazine??). In
addition, the image map is distracting.
