assignment for Thursday
Prof. Jones,
A. My email address is apratt@email.unc.edu.
B. Good web site: One of my faves is http://www.niu.edu/newsplace.
First, it's got great content. In my opinion it's the best news journal
research aid out there. Second, it's easy to navigate, with clear
subheadings located on the top and bottom of each page, and good,
working, updated links. Third, NO FRAMES!! (I hate frames, too)
Fourth, the site includes translation options for non-English speakers.
Fifth, graphics are limited but appropriate--they point to the content
and that's all (no blinking lights, aack!).
C. I feel much less comfortable labeling an entire site as "bad", but I
did find one that I did not care for on the whole. It's
http://www.chanel.com (as in, the fashion company). First, there is
little to no company information (who even runs it now is a mystery),
except for some limited information on products. Second, there are no
purchase options, which I believe to be essential for any merchant site
nowadays. Third, most of the type is small and almost fuzzy, but sizes
don't flow consistently from page to page. Fourth, the subheadings for
the intrasite links are whimsical and artsy--in other words, totally
unclear to the average person. Fifth, there are lots of blinking lights
(not harsh, but there) and pointless graphics. I think the site was
intended to be completely image oriented with pretty much no substance.
If I were a real Chanel customer, I would be frustrated.
