Being the Science Fiction geek that I am, I crave information about some of
my favorite sci-fi topics, including Star Wars, Star Trek, etc, etc. What I
look for in these sites is useful information, cool graphics and pics, and,
if it's based on a TV show, an episode log. I think
http://www.startrek.com
is a good site. It is fairly easy to navigate and provides an extensive log
of all 4 television series, a Trekkie's dream come true. If you've ever
watched Star Trek, you'll notice that the design of the "keys" to navigating
the site are modeled after the keypads on the Enterprise, a clever touch.
The "Briefing Room," the main page to navigate the site, is set up well and
modeled after a communication display readout from the TV show. The site
managers combine clever and relevant navigation tools & graphics with a
practical, easy to use setup with relevant (to a Trekkie anyway)
information.
This is off the subject, but I also think the http://studentcentral.unc.edu
Student Central portion of UNC's site is very well done. I use it frequently
and once you enter your PID and PAC, you have easy access to alot of
personal information quickly and easily. One quick scroll down and you have
several useful options.
I think a BAD example of a website is more difficult, because, like I said
in my first email to you, I haven't done a lot of "net surfing" so most
websites look okay to me, but there are always 1 or 2 that don't give me
what I am looking for. Back to the subject of sci-fi, I had heard there was
a new Battlestar Galactica movie in the works. I wanted to know if the
original cast was in it , when it would be coming out, and some other basic
info on the new production. Yet, if you go to the Battlestar Galactica
official movie website at http://www.battlestarmovie.com/, it tells you
essentially NOTHING about the film. Now I realize the film is a work in
progress in the early stages, but surely they have more information than the
tiny little tidbits they put on the site. And each page of the site is
embarassingly underdone. If they are trying to drum up interest in this
film, they failed so far. Even the hyped "production art work" is
unintelligible. I was disapointed, since information is the key reason
people visit a site, despite all the fancy technology.
