Re: ZDNET: Microsoft bans Java applets from its Web sites
The whole story points out one media deficiency when it comes to high
tech. Many reporters are pretty techno-illiterate, so they approach
stories like this looking for a good story, instead of trying to
understand what is going on. So you end up with an article -- both ZDNET
and CNN -- that point out the conflict between Microsoft and Sun, but
do a poor job of explaining what is really going on.
On the one hand, the anecdote about Bill Gates supposedly finding a JAVA
applet on his personal Web site is kind of ironic. But unless reporters
are willing to get below the surface and report more on technological
topics, the reporting will be incomplete, and we'll see more of the
uncritical fawning the accompanied that release of Microsoft Windows '95.
In other words, it's an interesting story, but the reporters are falling
down on the job.
