The U.S. Department of Defense held a secret colloquium in Washington DC last June in which military experts on Chinese Armies from many countries expressed their great concerns on this issue. As a result, the Center for Studies of Chinese Political and Economical Affairs (CSCPEA), a non-governmental institution, will held a three-day symposium on this subject. We call for high-quality papers for the symposium. As indicated by the great number of military analyses, more and more serious political dispute, divergence and confrontation between Mainland and Taiwan, along with the steady-fast growth of armed forces of both sides, has resulted in a mounting possibility of the military clash between the two. This has happened despite of the fact that the number of civilian communication and business exchange between the two sides has increased dramatically in recent years. The attempt and capability of using military forces to solve the Taiwan issue by the People's Liberation Army have never been more obvious than now. The rising force advocating the independence of Taiwan is another subtle factor, among others. The Center believes that the military clash will be definitely a horrible disaster to the people of both sides, and that the latent crisis of the clash has already posed a major threat to the Asian and World peace in the post-Cold War Era. Thus, it becomes necessary and urgent for us to study the mounting tendency of the military clash, to find the means of aviodance of the disaster, and scientifically to scale the potential intensity and the possible consequence of the clash. The Center is an independent research institution. There is no presupposed assertion being made in this symposium. In the last December, we held the symposium on "China After Deng Xiaoping" in Washington DC which received a broad response from both home and abroad. We expect the same success for this symposium. Anyone who shows a strong interest in and has carried the in-depth research on this subject may register in the symposium. The registrant must submit a full-length paper of 5,000 to 20,000 words to the Center no later than November 10th, 1994. Once the paper is evaluated and accepted, the Center will pay for his/her paper, the travel expense, and the board and accommomdation during the meeting. The organizer of the symposium can be reached by calling: (718)-463-1270 or (617)-492-0981, or fax to (718)-460-6248. --------------------------- End ------------------------------------- _________________________________________________________________________ D
