CBS-IC just faxed the following message to Reader's Digest, together with letters from 1) US CCR to CBS' Mr. Ober; 2) DIA to CBS-IC; 3) CBS' Mr. Ober to OCA's Ginny Gong; and 4) New York Time's report on 10/23/94, Section National, A36 Mr. Lin Huang Chair, Civil Rights Committee/IFCSS CBS Incident Committee 3044 Albany Crescent 1G Bronx, NY 10463 (718)-548-9114 October 31, 1994 Kenneth Y. Tomlinson: Editor-in-Chief Editorial Board Reader's Digest 914-238-4559 (fax) Dear Editor-in-Chief Tomlinson: It has come to my attention that Reader's Digest is going to carry an article on Chinese spies in its December issue. While believing a reputable magazine such as Reader's Digest will conduct its investigation professionally, I can't but expressing my grave concern over the possible adverse impact of such kind of story upon lives of tens of thousands of Chinese and Asian Americans, legal immigrants and visitors. Recently we just ended a dispute with CBS, concerning a similar incident (please refer to the attached article from New York Times and the letter from US Civil Rights Commission). We hope at very least the article should make it clear that the vast majority of the Chinese Americans, legal residents and temporary visitors are innocent and law- abiding. If we feel that the article fails to convey that message, we reserve the right to take further actions. The Civil Rights Committee of Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars (IFCSS) and CBS Incident Committee have done extended research on the Chinese spy issue. We welcome the opportunity to work with you and set the record straight. Sincerely, Lin Huang Enclosure: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % Mr. Mi Mi, Sr., Coordinator of CBS Incident Committee % % Sign on/off at listserv@ifcss.org, with mailbody as: % % sub fcbs-l Firstname Lastname, or signoff fcbs-l % % Post: fcbs-l@ifcss.org ftp//ifcss.org/ifcss/Legal/cbs % $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $ Please make contributions payable to $ $ IFCSS/CBS Incident Fund, and mail it to $ $ Mr. Frank Chen / CBSIC $ $ 361 Ogden Avenue $ $ Jersey City, NJ 07307 $ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
