Protect Darfur Women and Their Daughters from Abuse and Genocide

"Darfuri women and girls are under constant threat of rape and physical assault by the Janjaweed. Girls as young as eight risk being raped and attacked when they leave their homes or refugee camps to gather firewood and food. Hungry families face a terrible choice each day - do they send out their husbands and sons who may be killed, or their mothers and daughters, who may be raped and beaten? This is a choice no one should ever have to make! "

Rape risk spirals for Darfur women

By Karen Allen
BBC News, Kutum

"Hawa was raped in broad daylight, the way it often happens here in northern Darfur...No protection

I found 21 women and girls have been raped in the camp in the past two weeks.

It is a staggering figure that gives some insight into the vulnerability of areas where peacekeepers are absent."

(2004). Sudan: government fails to stop rape warfare. Off Our Backs, 34 (9-10): 5.

"The government of Sudan finally admitted August 23 that paramilitary forces in Darfur have abused human rights and committed widespread rape. It gave the United Nations a list of 30 men who might have been involved in the crimes.

But observers say government troops cooperate with the paramilitary Janjaweed militia, an Arab group that has been forcing black Sudanese out of their villages. Amnesty International has charged that the militia is using systematic rape as a weapon in putting down a rebellion by the blacks, who are mostly Christian or animist, against the government, which is controlled by Muslims."

(2006). Sudan: Darfur attacks on women worsen, Off Our Backs. 36 (3): 4

"During the week of August 20 alone, militia and other men raped 200 women in the Kalma refugee camp, according to the International Rescue Committee."
