First and foremost, we must realize that this thread crosses many
jurisdictions with different federal, state/provincial, and local laws.

I remember a couple of years ago a Hamilton, Ontario officer faced criminal
charges for failing to stop before proceeding through an intersection while on
a call. He was charged because, in doing so, he hit someone.
There's no middle ground; if no harm is done, it's kept secret. However, if
something does go wrong, they hang the cop involved.
No professional group can get away with that. Heck, if it wasn't for doctors
trying to keep doctors in line, and pilots trying to keep pilots in line,
etc. we'd probably be as nasty as we are to professions that "stick together"
like the cops do. And I like to think that we wouldn't cheer so loud when
some poor schnook who does what every other cop does gets caught doing it and
is made an example of.
Cops do things like that *because they can*. Strict enforcement of
regulations like that and significantly less severe punishments would lead to
a far better working relationship between cops & the public they 'serve'.

Interesting cases; care to give more details, especially on when peace
officers anywhere in this continent were issued fully automatic weapons?
