   If there was an inexpensive / convenient "advanced" driver training
course, I'd take it (I'm aware of skid schools and other courses which are
neither cheap nor convenient). Unfortunately, I suspect these courses may
encourage overconfidence in those so inclined. IMO controlling a skid on a
normal road (mix of dry/slush/bad pavement) is quite different from
controlling a skid on a skidpad (uniformly wet, smooth).

   I read about a small survey done in England which showed a LARGE
percentage of drivers failed to meet the requirements for vision. One
officer was nearly run over as he tried to flag down a motorist - the driver
didn't see him. (I suspect that the driver who ran over me a few years ago
was looking the other way for cars, but she may also have had reduced
vision).

   I was quite amused when I groped my way into the ophthalmologist's office
after eye surgery, and he asked if I'd driven down :-(   I'm PRETTY sure he
was serious.
