Well, the smog isn't as bad as it used to be when I was growning up here,
even though we have 3 times the population. I thank the EPA, may they
continue their success. The traffic . . . well you have no idea what that
does to your brain.

OK, let's take this tack: If you are going to occupy a lane, it is
illegal to double up, at least here in California. Also, I hope you're
not advocating motorists crossing double yellow lines to pass cyclists.
Another thing to keep in mind is that road construction funds in the US
largely come from gasoline taxes. In a technical sense the roads belong
to motorists.
I suspect that people who commute largely by bicycle, but also drive
sometimes are more aware of what's going on than those who commute solely
by bicycle or occasionally use bicycles for pleasure or exercise. It's an
unfortunate fact of life that anyone can bike just by plunking down their
money, and it doesn't take much more to drive.
