"El
Domingo es fuerte. (Sundays are strong)" This is how Juan Olave,
the director of the men´s athletic clubs in San Pedro, describes
the town´s weekly soccer matches on Sunday afternoon.
Without
other forms of entertainment, soccer remains the favorite pastime
of this small, isolated community in Chile´s Atacama desert.
The games are "strong" indeed, never lacking for rivalry,
passion and dust.
Men,
traditionally, are the primary participants in the town´s
athletic competitions, though women have always been cheering from
the sidelines. But recently some women got tired of only watching.
They too wanted a way to escape from the tiresome responsibilites
of day-to-day life. So they started a basketball league for women
that now plays on Sunday as well. And their games are also "strong."
This
multimedia documentary examines the role of sports in San Pedro
de Atacama through the point of view of several of its key participants,
both male and female.
