Projects

Here are a few things I've been working on

SEDLS 2022 Poster: Data isn't Neutral, So What is It? Standpoint Theory, Positionality, and Data in Context

I presented this poster at the Southeast Data Librarian Symposium 2022. Standpoint Theory tells us that knowledge is a social construction. A positionality statement states the social position of the researcher in relation to the research. This project explores the concept of positionality statements for data in the repository and potentially in the metadata as well. We know that data isn't neutral, a data positionality statement can place the data in it's context.

Collection Analysis page on Duke Library Collection Services wiki

This is my web space over at Duke Libraries where I talk about my collection analysis philosophy, and share some of my projects.

Library Data Cleaning Code Library

Some R code to clean up library data. Includes a title normalizing function, some code to split a column at a pipe and then clean the resulting columns, and some to clean up ISSN/ISBN columns.

I'm not an R expert at all, but these are useful for me and maybe for others. This is a constant work in progress.

Master's Project: Data sharing for Master Theses: Survey and Recommendations

My master's project is a survey of data sharing policy in the US, recommendations to UNC SILS to add a data sharing requirement (data management plan and data availability statement) to the master's paper/project requirements and a libguide to help UNC SILS students share data if desired. You'll find the abstract, paper, and link to the libguide here.

Omeka HTML Archive

I research family genealogy and have come across some interesting pictures and articles that I'll post here.

I'm thinking about web sustainability and reliance on these tools that need care and feeding. I will be moving this project off of Omeka and will return it in just straight forward HTML.

Makerspace LibGuide

I created this LibGuide for INLS 501 for middle school and high school librarians looking to get started on creating a makerspace

JavaScript Video example

this was a requirement for a class - but I really like this video so I'm keeping it here

North Carolina County Seat Project

I plan to visit every county seat in North Carolina and note it on a map. We'll probably eat some local bbq or ice cream while there. Check it out over here.

2024 Update I never actually did this - I enjoyed making the map in leafletjs, and hope to someday get back to it.
