Internship - CNN Library – (Chicago), 05/07/2008

Please Note: Internships are UNPAID and structured to last approximately 10-12 weeks, generally in the format of typical college semesters. A resume and cover letter are required for application. Please include days/hours of availability in your cover letter and three references at the end of your resume. Students should have a strong academic record (a 3.0 GPA or higher) and good character. Students must currently be enrolled in and pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) or some variation. Note to International Students: All international interns will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to arrival. Only J1 or F1 student visas will be accepted. Deadline is June 15th.

Internship Description: The CNN Library functions as both as a research center and video archive, and supports worldwide newsgathering and production for CNN networks and web sites, as well as other Turner companies.

The Chicago Bureau manages coverage in a 12-state region that includes Dallas, Denver and all points in between. It covers a wide range of stories, both breaking news and scheduled features.

This internship will focus on video cataloging - assessing the Chicago Bureau’s video for archiving and then cataloging selected video in the Library content management system.

Qualifications: Candidate must currently be enrolled in and pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) or some variation, with an interest in or focus on journalism or special libraries preferred. Candidate should have knowledge of Chicago/Midwest current events and recent history. Candidates should be a highly motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented and able to work independently. Effective written and verbal communication skills are a top priority.

Editorial Projects in Education, publisher of Education Week, has an opening for a summer intern to work in the EPE library. This is a temporary, part-time position, 15-20 hours per week, paying $12.00/hour. Internship may begin in May, if desired.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic not-for-profit organization and gain focused, supportive training and professional experience in the field of special and news librarianship. Working closely with the EPE librarians, the intern will participate in providing information services to support the activities of an energetic and dedicated staff of reporters, editors, and web and research professionals.

Archivist Internship, National Public Radio (located on U of Maryland campus) (ongoing)

The Archive intern will perform indexing, cataloging and audio research of NPR cultural programming located at the University of Maryland. NPR seeks intern candidates who are interested in learning to index audio content, archive audio content, and assist with ongoing projects. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Candidates with demonstrated interest in archiving, audio resources and/or metadata will be given top consideration. One year of related work experience desired. Familiarity with Windows 2000, MS Office, SQL, Visual Basic and relational database management a plus. Candidates must be a library school student or recent graduate who is interested in a career in news libraries, sound cataloging, or audio archives.

The NPR Broadcast Library supports the audio research needs of NPR's journalists, and maintains NPR's archive. Librarians perform deadline audio research for all NPR programs and divisions, and index program and other audio materials. The NPR Broadcast Library seeks intern candidates who are interested in learning to provide audio reference, index audio content, provide user education, and assist with ongoing projects. Interns participate in library meetings and other professional activities, and are able to work well independently. Candidates with demonstrated interest in audio resources and/or metadata will be given top consideration. Experience with online database searching is a plus. Candidates must be a library school student or recent graduate who is interested in a career in news libraries, sound cataloging, or audio archives.

Music Library Internship, National Public Radio (ongoing)

NPR's use of music is a hallmark of its programming. The NPR Music Library provides production and reference services for NPR programs and staff and is involved with music use for NPR's daily broadcast shows, on-air promotion campaigns and special projects. After learning a database, interns will index music CDs into NPR's music collection. Opportunities to assist with music reference, database quality control and collection development will be available. Candidates should be computer literate, have knowledge and/or interest in music (any type), be detail oriented and available to work flexible hours. Candidate must be a library school student interested in a career in music libraries or sound cataloging.

Reference Library Internship, National Public Radio (ongoing)

The NPR Reference Library is an integral, essential part of the news-gathering and editorial process. The librarians conduct ready and in-depth research, provide fact-checking and pronunciation guidance, and suggest experts and story ideas for NPR staff in a fast-paced deadline-based environment. The librarians use print and online resources, including commercial databases, a print collection, and intranet resources. The NPR Reference Library seeks intern candidates who are interested in learning more about providing reference services in a deadline-based environment. The Reference Library intern candidate must be a current or recent library school student, have prior reference experience, and have experience using LexisNexis and/or Factiva and other print and online resources. The intern candidate should be able to work independently and be adaptable to a changing work environment. The ideal candidate should have an interest in variety of areas including news, world events and popular culture.

The recommended dates for the spring internship are January 30, 2008 to May 2, 2008.

Please Note: Internships are UNPAID and structured to last approximately 12 weeks. Resume and cover letter are required for application. Please include days/hours of availability in your cover letter and a college reference contact at the end of your resume. Students should have a strong academic record and good character. Students must have completed their sophomore year in college prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated college or graduate school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. students must still be enrolled in school during the time of the internship). Students must be receiving course credit for DC internships. Note to International Students: All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to arrival if accepted to the program. Only student visas J1 or F1 visas will be accepted. Deadline to apply for fall internships is December 1, 2007.

Internship Description: The CNN DC Bureau Library provides video and information in support of CNN’s DC Bureau. It functions as both an archive and a research library. The library develops, manages and stores collections in an expanding variety of formats; provides access to information and knowledge held in those collections using appropriate storage, access and computer technologies; preserves the information for future use; and assists the bureau in the use of library resources. Additionally, the library provides research in support of the bureau’s production needs, utilizing the most current technologies available – Lexis-Nexis, Factiva and the Internet.

One library internship will be filled with a student pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree. The internship will provide a great opportunity to learn various aspects of librarianship and television production in CNN’s fast-paced library. . Interns will assist the library staff in preparing for digital conversion by learning how to evaluate a section of the tape library and deciding which videotapes will be cataloged and saved as part of the permanent collection. This also includes learning to create library records for each saved tape and appropriately indexing those records for future retrieval. Interns will learn to use online resources to assist in evaluating video and in the creation of records. Interns will shadow the library staff as they complete requests for video and/or research to support the bureau's news coverage of DC political and federal events, programs such as The Situation Room, and other bureaus' needs of DC-centric information and video.

The MLS intern will also learn to assist the librarians in various projects such as contributing ideas and compiling content for the DC Bureau's Library intranet site as well as helping to develop the intranet site; and library records/database maintenance. The MLS intern will have the opportunity to participate in the creation and development of instructional classes on various topics (e.g., research techniques, print and internet resources).

Qualifications: In order to facilitate the learning experience, the following qualifications are preferred. Candidates should have an interest in variety of areas including journalism and should be an organized self-starter. Interns should have the ability to make decisions, and accept others decisions, and be able to work well with a team of librarians and fellow interns.

Academic Internships or Field Study, Baltimore Sun (ongoing)

The Baltimore Sun Editorial Library has a long tradition of hosting academic interns or field study students from library science or information studies masters degree programs. We offer an unpaid position that qualifies for academic credit. The position is always open, and we are flexible regarding your schedule. Your time at The Sun will include an introduction to news librarianship, involve work on one project of the student's choosing, and include actual work on the news research desk. The library's research department is a team-based environment providing both ready reference and in-depth research services. Students will join our News Research staff in providing research services to the newsroom, business units such as marketing and advertising, and our website. Experience in online searching, knowledge of standard reference works, and some knowledge of the journalistic process will be gained. Skills in the following will also be taught: public records searching, image digitization and archiving, end-user training, and website maintenance.
