By Jennifer Small

Hopefully you are all reading this issue of News Library News before you push off to Minneapolis and the fabulous 75th anniversary celebration of the News Division.

It has been one year now since I have assumed the role of Managing Editor for NLN. This year has been quite a learning experience! Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to contribute. Your contributions help maintain this division publication as one of the best.

Like all editors, I suppose, I have been frustrated over the year with our limited amount of white space. Twelve or sixteen pages just does not seem to be able to hold all the "news" that this division likes to share.

In the coming year, therefore, we will turn toward the Web and its limitless copy hole. With the help of new webmeistress, Andrea Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, and former NLN ME, Catherine Kitchell of BNA, I hope to spruce up the web version of NLN. In the web edition, found on the News Division web page (http://metalab.unc.edu/slanews/), we will post articles that are more suited for the web or those that can’t fit into the hard copy version because of space constraints. If there is an ‘extra’ on the web version, a notice will appear in the hard copy of NLN. The web version of this issue has an ‘extra’ written by Susan Jones of BNA. Susan has compiled the links that she uses for a copy editors training class. She has successfully compiled a number of great sites that copy editors at your establishments would value. Check it out!

We welcome all suggestions that you may have for additions to NLN on the web. Should we consider posting good web sites, for example, or handouts or cheat sheets compiled by news librarians for training purposes? Any ideas that you have are welcome. Please email me at jsmall@express-news.net.
