The SrevaishNavite Physician

The branches of medical sciences have advanced to such an extent, that the
specialisation has been to extreme micro levels. The cardiology, dermatology
apart, expertise has now spread
to more and more subjects.

Nevertheless, the physician being specialised in srEvaishNavism and otherwise
is indeed not a common observation neither these days nor then. No, we are not
talking of doctorates in the subject of our philosophy. We are indeed dwelling
on the medical sciences.

Indeed, when svAmi Nam-AzvhAr fainted owing to separation from EmperumAn, the
nearby doctor was summoned to anlayse the reasons behind the disease and cure
her from the ills.

Being, the mundane and earthly physician, the lady applied her usual means of
diagnosing and attributed the origin of the problem to some small deities and
prescribing medicines apposite to the nature of those devathAs. "Yes", she
declared," the problem appears to be because of the dhEvathAnthram-s and their
appeasement is the uppermost priority and need of the hour" and started
ordering for liquor, and non-vegetarian items and polluted the entire
atmosphere. The environment not only got contaminated because of these
undesirable commodities but the very concept of influence of dhEathAnthram-s.
To imagine, that svAmi Nam-AzvAr had succumbed to such ghastly effects is in
itself, highly irrational, and over and above, treating with the dastardly
means,is indeed appalling.

That the friends of AzvAr -female thOzhi-s - declared that this acts of the
physicians who cannot think in the srEvaishNavite angle would do no good but
only aggravate the situation and proscribed these acts and offered EmperumAn's
Thirunam as panacea. It is another matter that this whole subject matter is
called 'veRi vilakku'; in tamil literature.

Thirumangai AzvAr is more fortunate in this regard. Her strange acts of
commissions and omissions have also drawn attention and the physicians did
diagnose. The luckiest part is that they were able to think in SrEvaishNavite
angle and proclaimed forthwith with incisive precision that the problem lied
with EmeprumAn Himself and who other than Him can rescue parakAla nAyaki from
these pangs of separation and the ensuing eerie acts of suddenly wearing silk
robes and indifference to earthly toys.

Neither, the problems of physical state of AzvAr emanating from his mental
affliction nor that of the acts of Kaliyan originating from the attachment to
EmperumAn are imaginary. These are evidenced right from their own prabhandham-s.

AzvAr-s problems resulting in non-SrEvaishNavic doctor implementing absurd
means and Thirumangai AzvAr's doctor being a inclined to think with our angle
and soon diagnosing the problem and taking the logical resoning to the Lord
Himself are seen from

The thOzi declaring ultimately 'kALLum iRaichiyum thUvEan min' and
the eternal medicine 'yEazh piRappukkum sEamam in-nOikkum EDhEa marundhu'
retrieving SaTakOpan from the suffering and

Kaliyan's pangs and the immediate prescription is noted from the

and the final line summing up the whole issue as 'kaDal vaNNar idhu seidhAr

Not only one needs a sRevaishNavite association but also perhaps also a
srEvaishNavite doctor.
