Post 15

Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

Wish all the readers of the lists a very happy dheepaavali and my sincere prayers to raama and seethaa to confer their grace in these economically difficult times.

Continuing on that naama 'neeraja nayanaaya namah', and neeraja nayanaayai namah, when sugreeva sees raama and lakshmaNa for the first time, the way he reacts to hanumaan on seeing the two are spelt by vaalmeeki - with the first eye catching features of the two - as --

dheergha baahoo visaala akshou sara chaapa asi dhaariNou |

kasya na syaat bhayam dhrishTvaa hi Ethou sura sutha upamou || 4-2-20

meaning: Sugreeva thus spoke to Hanumaan, "Lengthy are their arms, broad are their eyes and they are the wielders of arrows, bows and swords... and on seeing them, to whom there will be no scare? These two are like the sons of some divinity".

Point: since sugreeva was scared and seeing these two from a distance, whether it is lotus eyes or not â he is unable to spell it for he is scared as per his own words but one thing is for sure â those broad eyes caught his attention.

Since hanumaan comes nearby to the two brothers, raama and lakshmaNa, now he talks more on the eyes --

padhma pathra eekshaNou veerou jaTaa maNDala dhaariNau |

anyOnya sadhrisou veerou dhEva lOkaath iha aagathou || 4-3-12

yadhrichChayaa Eva sampraapthou chandhra sooryou vasundharaam |

visaala vakshasou veerou maanushou dhEva roopiNou || 4-3-13

simha skandhou mahaa uthsaahou samadhou iva gOvrishou |

meaning: hanumaan says, to the two brothers, raama and lakshmaNa, [on being commissioned by sugreeva to check who these two are and on seeing them closely],

"Eyes of yours are like fine lotus petals, are you superhuman?

nay, you wear tufts and braids, are you some undaunted human ascetics?

nay, you look clonal, are you from some world of gods?

nay, you are on earth, does this earth have a chance to receive Sun and Moon on her by her fortune?

nay, are you some broad-chested deities in human form...

        lion-shouldered,

very vehement and vigorous like Sacred Bulls...

who you two might be? [4-3-12, 13, 14a]

point: First the lotus eyes are the attraction for hanumaan. Then only are those other features. Are these words not something similar to what king sumathi and king janaka said earlier â seen in post 10 â just slOkam alone --

padhma pathra visaala akshou khaDga thooNee dhanur dharou |

asvinou iva roopENa samupasthitha youvanou || 1-48-3.

Now let us switch over to seethaa, for hanumaan when first sees her broad eyes as sugreeva sees the 2 brothers. Then when he has a good look or close look that padhma aksham attracts --

thaam sameekshya visaala aksheem adhikam malinaam krisaam || 5-15-26

tharkayaam aasa seethaa ithi kaaraNaih upapaadhibhih |

meaning: Observing that woman with wide eyes, very untidy, emaciated, Hanumaan thought that this is indeed Seethaa on logical grounds.

poorNa chandhra aananaam subhroom chaaru vriththa payodharaam || 5-15-28

kurvantheem prabhayaa dhEveem sarvaa vithimiraa dhisah |

thaam neela kEseem bimba OshTheem sumadhyaam suprathishThithaam || 5-15-29

seethaam padhma palaasa aksheem manmathasya rathim yathaa |

meaning: Hanumaan saw Seethaa,

with a face like full moon,

        with beautiful eyebrows,

        with graceful rounded breasts,

by her body radiance making all directions lighted, thus dispelling darkness,

        goddess like with black hair,

        with lips like bimba fruit,

        with a good waist,

        very firm body and posture,

        with eyes like lotus petals,

like Rati the consort of god of love.

So the scene at a first look for hanumaan on seeing both raama and seethaa are almost same âin hanumaan's own words again â "In whatever way is this lady's appearance, elegance of major and minor limbs, in the same way is Raama's. In whatever way His appearance, in the same way is this black-eyed one's appearance" which we saw in previous post.

So it is a 'made for each other' roopam of raama and seethaa. That is why the naama neeraja nayanaaya and nayanayai together.

I think I will stop with on this naama and take up the next one in next post.

 Dhasan
