Dear Bhagavathas,
My name is Vedaraman Sriraman. I am a Manufacturing Engineering faculty person at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. I grew up in Madras, although my family hails from Manakkal, Lalgudi District, Tamil Nadu. A Smarta by origin I am very interested in the Sri sampradayam (particularly in Pillai Lokacharyar's works). Many bhagavathas in this list have helped me with my queries. I am grateful for this learning opportunity.

Sriman Mukundan suggessted that I periodically post portions of U.Ve. Satyamurti Ayyangar Swamin's book on Amalanatipiran. In this mail I have included the Taniyans for this Prabandam. The Swamin's work is based on the commentaries of Periya Vaccan Pillai, AMP Nayanar and Vedanta Desika. I wish to state the following are the fruits of the labor of Satyamurti Ayyangar Swamin. With Perumal's grace all that I have done is simply retype the document. Needless to say all typos are mine and I beg everybody's pardon in advance.

AMALANATIPIRAN

[The text (transliterated in English), translation and notes]

[The translation is in verse form but not with the usual tinge of poetic fancy (frenzy ?), indulging in fanciful (daring) departures from the text. The present translation faithfully conforms to the original, as in the case of my rendition, in English, of Tiruvaymoli, Tiruppavai, Tirumalai, Tirupallielucci etc. The verse form has been choosen as it is found to have a better appeal than prose.]

Taniyans (Invocatory Songs)

Sanskrit Sloka (by Mahapurnar)

Apada cudamanubhuya harim sáyanam
Madhyekaveraduhitur muditantaratma |
Adrstrtam nayanayor visayantaranam
Yo niscikaya manavai munivahanam tam ||

Meditate I shall upon saint Munivahana who swore,
His eyes shall none else behold anymore,
Having seen the Lord Hari, feet upwards, in splendor galore,
Tween twin branches of, Kaveri, in sweet repose.

Note: 'Apadacudam' : [From the feet to the crown - This might have been the Alvar's resolve, to start with, but he could not lift his eyes of the Lord's pair of lotus eyes, dazed and dazzled that he was. See notes under Song Eight.]

Tamil Taniyan (by Srisaila Purnar)

Kattave kanta padakamalam nalladai unti
Tettarum udara bandam tirumar pukantam cevvay |
Vattamil kankal meni muniyerittani pukuntu
Pattinal kantu valum Panar talparavinome ||

Blessed are we to worship the feet of Panar, the bard,
By joy sustained, espying thro' vision, by the Lord dowered,
His feet lovely, radiant robes, exciting navel, glittering waistband,
Winsome chest with Tiru, on it well-poised,
Lovely neck, coral lips, eyes lotus-red, the cloud-hued
Form enthralling, inside the sanctum on the Muni mounted. ||

Note : [In this treatise it is not proposed to tire out the readers with the mass of details, found in the several commentaries but to present the best parts of them all, in a compact and easily assimilable form, with suitable additions to make their reading intelligible].
