Dear Nappinnai, Abivadanam is telling our rishivargham, gotram, sutram , sakai ,name etc to the elders and doing prostration to them. Every brahmin is supposed to do that when he prostrates to an elder. There is no difference between thengalais and vadakalais in this issue. There are someplaces and restrictions where one should not do this. for example we should not do abhivadhanam to perumaal, jeeyars (yathivaras), Gosti, women etc. During daily trikala sandhyavandanam we do abhivadhanam twice per sandhi. I think there is one place where it differs but i shall consult a book by Sri Mahavidhwan Nyaya sironmani Yathindrapravana prabhavam U.Ve Stalasayanam swamys book on this and post a detailed posting on this. Dasan, Nallan Chakravarthy Narashiman.
