Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha:

This is a very subtle point,

Normally in our sampradaya, Abhivadanam is done only for Kamya Karmas (Pitru
Karyams, etc.)
Also we do Abhivadanam during every SandhyaVandanam

In all these karmas it is already mentioned, perform Abhivada here, after this
step, so we are just following the procedure for those karmas.

By doing Abhivada we introduce ourselves, but the result/reason of the
introduction is,
to seek something from the other person (we are doing Abhivadanam to)

Normally in our (sri vaishnava) sampradayam, our Periyavas would do abhivadanam,
apart from the Kamyakarmas (& Sandhyavandanam)
only when a very elderly, scholarly person is being prostrated to,
as we are asking them to Bless us with their good wishes.

We normally do NOT perform abhivadanam to Perumal, Yathis,
Ghosti & any Women (other than mother) .

Normally, in Smartha tradition this is extremely important. Every time one
prostrates, Abhivadanam is a must and the return blessing also will
be always seen loud and clear.

In case of adiyEn's experiences, most of my Smartha seniors, (including my Sama
Veda teacher) would wait/ask for the Abhivadanam every time, and wait
for its completion and only then offer the Asheervadams.

In our sampradayam, normal prostrations, at home and other places,
is to indicate Dasatvam (dasa bhavam), and introductions
just as Adiyen "so & so" Ramanuja Dasan, Madhurakavi dasan, Srivaishnava Dasan.

We do not want to forcefully ask for anything (including their best wishes &
blessings)
In most cases just by introducing as Adiyen "so & so" Ramanuja Dasan,
the elder's blessing is already felt.

In these cases, we should always do what our elders have done, as all these
behaviours have a perfect and logical reasoning behind them.

So the best is to do as our periyavas have done it.

(Thiruppavai: Saiyya thana seiiyyom,
Do not do any thing they (previous) did not do (or approve),
Even if you miss a thing or two that they did, there is some hope for your
lineage,
but if you start introducing new procedures, rules etc, Andal is warning
against that.)
