Sri Krishnaparabrahmane Namah!

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the information on Sri Krishna Sahasranamam. I am sure it must be
a good buy. I thought I shall share a few things I read about the Vishnu
Sahasranama. I am sure most of you reading this would be aware of the story -
please forgive me but since the incident as to how the Vishnu Sahasranama came
to be articulated is a beautiful and moving story I thought I shall share it
with you.

Bhishma, was lying on the bed of arrows and awaiting his death, to a question
Yudhishtira's asked as to what is the easiest and best means by which mankind
can attain lasting happiness, peace of mind, relief from all bondage and
sorrows and salvation, Bhishma gave the answer that it is the 1008 names of
Lord Vishnu. A great warrior lying on a bed of arrows and reciting the 1008
names of Mahavishnu, the mental picture that it evokes is moving and brings
tears to one's eyes. This he did in the presence of Lord Krishna himself. The
Vishnu Sahasranama appears in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata . The
Sahasranama were strung together by Sage Vedavyasa. Vishnusahasranama . As we
already know each name in the Vishnusahasranama highlights a particular
excellence of the Lord.

Another interesting aspect is that there are exactly 1031 names of Lord Vishnu
in the 'Sahasranama' and not 1008 there are some repetitions also. But then the
picture of a great man on a bed of arrows reciting the names of the Lord is a
moving picture. When we were children we used to go to Sri Parthasarathy
Temple, Triplicane and I think or if I remember right there was a painting of
Bheeshmacharya on a bed of arrows and the Sahasranama on the wall adjacent to
it! I think it is behind the Thayar Sannadhi ,It is a picture that I shall
never forget.

Regards,

Srimathi Raghavan
