From: Subha Venkatesan >In context of this posting, here are a few sites where scanned books >are online and I have found quite a few books at the site " the >million book project". Here are a couple of downloads. sripedia was born of an interest to assist in such an effort, and has assisted the internet archive, the million book project and TTD in their efforts. I might suggest the following 1. There are well-funded eforts underway that will sooner or later reach organized (libraries etc) and semi organized (institutions etc.) organizations. 2. the efforts of individuals on this list may best be placed in 'identifying' manuscripts that reside in individual or adhoc collections. 3. a manuscript registry has been setup towards just such an effort. http://www.ibiblio.org/sripedia/cgi-bin/manuscript Note: Individuals who treasure rare works who maybe concerened with parting with these works for the sake of digitizing will most likely welcome a cataloging effort that merely wishes to 'record' the availability of such a work. Finally, digitizing, archiving and preservation are not sprints but long marathons and a small first step that individuals such as those on this list might take could be in assisting with the cataloging of available rare works in individual and adhoc collections.
