While I fully agree with the views of Pradeep, the reason why pariharams and
poojas are recommended by astrologers is because "man" does not have the
inner strength to just go through day to day problems when they become
overwhelming. The mind looks for a "walking stick" and if the subject is
driven to the routine prayer mechanism (even though that is enough) the
doubts that the "Almighty' is not there to help the subject continues to
lurk in the highly "chanchala mana" of the subject. And there is nothing
wrong in asking a subject in doing some parikaarams such as take a vow to
climb the seven hills for the Gopura darisanam, anga pradakshinam, feed
brahmins, donate to a noble cause or follow certain austere measures such as
fasting, mounavratham,e tc. The parikaarams do not take away the problems,
rather strengthen the resolve of the mind to face the extraordinary issues
that arise in our lives. The mistake most make is to seek remedies which are
a quick fix which when seem futile could lead to disbelief the Lord Himself.
Astrology is a science and needs to be interpreted very carefully. The
perception that problems can just dissipate has to be broken. We are all on
this earth to serve a purpose and during the process there are teething
issues which we have to face which Hindus of course have identified to
Karmic effect. There is no running away from the Karmic effects unless one
really can forgo all desires and resolve to be a "sanyasin" which is well
neigh impossible by more than 98% of the subjects. That is why these
parikaarams come to play.

In any case "total surrender" to the Lord has no substitute.

Regards

Anand

Subject: [SriRangaSri] astrology and vaishnavas

> a) Are Srivaishnavas supposed to believe in Astrology ?

Astrology or Jyotisham is a Veda-angam, which contains both the
astronomy and astrology parts. So belief in the Vedas is necessary.
It is a divine knowledge.

> b) Are there any mantras that a srivaishnavite can chant for
success in marriage - I have heard that there are some astrologers
who suggest different mantras - one such example being the
ketumantra. I am not sure if chanting those is ok for a
srivaishnavite.

But, when one surrenders to the Lord, Srinivasa Perumal, that's more
than enough. All the planets, stars, the sun, the moon everything
derive their power by the grace of the Lord. They are just performing
their duty and giving us the appropriate results at the appropriate
times based on our karmas.

Usually, in any Vaishnava temple, there are no NavaGrahams installed.
They dont have a role where there is the Supreme Lord.

Astrologers make money, by promoting pujas and parikaarams to
NavaGrahams etc. But if one surrenders completely to Lord Narayana,
that's more than enough.

Sarva-deva Namaskaaram Sri Kesavam Prati gacchati! The prayers to all
the demi-gods finally reaches Sri Kesava only, so better to pray to
Kesava itself.

Radhe Krishna
