Dr. Benjamin Aaron was the doctor who operated on Reagan after Hinckley's failed assassination attempt in 1981.
Abrams, Elliott
Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs 1985-1989. Chairman, Restricted Inter-Agency Group (RIG). August 1986 he solicited $10 million from Sultan of Brunei to purchase arms for Contras. Pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges of withholding information from Congress. Sentenced to community service and two years probation. Pardoned December 24, 1992.

Allen, James M.
Eureka Board member and acting president during the transition period that followed the student strike and President Bert Wilson's subsequent resignation. Board chairman Richard Dickinson was named acting president directly after Wilson's resignation and served from 1928-29. James Allen served from 1929-1930. Clyde Lyon was then elected president and served from 1930-1936.
Allen, Richard V. (Dick)
Senior Foreign policy and National security advisor to Ronald Reagan from 1978-80. Appointed to the NSC by Reagan and served as Assistant for National Security Affairs from 1981-82.. Allen began appearing in the press in fall, 1981 linked to a scandal in which $1,000 was found in an NSC safe. Allen had intercepted the money when Japanese journalists tried to give it to Nancy Reagan and forgot it was in the safe. Allen left the White House in 1982.

Helen was the wife of Sid Altschuler, and was a native of Dixon.
Altschuler, Sid
The Altschuler's lived in Kansas City and spent their summers in Dixon. Ronald Reagan taught their two daughters to swim and Altschuler, a prominent businessman, was appreciative and liked Reagan. He offered to help Reagan find a job the summer following his senior year, Reagan said he wasn't sure what he wanted to do. Altschuler told him to think about it and let him know. A few days later, Reagan had decided that he wanted a job in radio, an area in which Altschuler had no connections. Regardless, Sid's question had helped Reagan make a decision about his career.

Baldwin, Margaret Reagan
When Jack Reagan's parents died, he was sent to live with his Aunt Margaret and Uncle Orson Baldwin in Bennett, Iowa. Margaret had married late at the age of 38 and was fairly set in her ways. Her husband was also older, 49, and neither had any experience with children. The Baldwins ran an unsuccessful general store in the small town (population 300). Margaret was very strict and religious, and very Old World Irish. She was not happy in Bennett, which was unsophisticated compared to Davenport, their previous home. She and her husband kept to themselves and were not involved in the community. They had problems disciplining Jack, and he was sent back to Fulton when he was 16 to live with his grandmother Catherine. Jack's relationship with them deteriorated to the point where he had to stay at a hotel when he went to visit. The Baldwins sold the store and moved to Waterloo, Iowa in 1901. From there they moved to Prophetstown, Illinois.

Democrat California state senator from Beverly Hills; sponsored liberalized abortion bill that Reagan refused to support until the bill was amended to only allow abortions in the case of rape, incest or endangerment to the mother. A last minute loophole discovered by Reagan's staff created the appearance of Reagan's indecisiveness concerning such emotional legislation.

Birney, Frank Orville, Jr.
Childhood friend of Nancy Davis Reagan who committed suicide in December, 1941. Birney had been depressed, in part due to the fact that he had made bad grades at Princeton and was forced to stay well into his Christmas vacation to improve his performance. He had called his brother and sister in his depression and they were so worried they asked him to come to New York City for a night. He set out apparently to take an evening train to New York city, but instead threw himself in front of a train and was killed. There was some question as to why he was not wearing his ring or carrying any money, and some speculation that it could have been a robbery and murder. Either way, it was a traumatic event in Nancy's life and for Birney's family.

Engineer and the bell ringer at Eureka College. He was the one who rang the church bell that indicated the beginning and end of classes. He was Reagan's friends on campus, a man he liked and respected. Brubaker often took the students' side in controversies with faculty and was known for his colorful language, hence the nickname "Professor of Profane Language," given to him by the students.

Burghardt, William Franklin "Burgie"
Burghardt was a center on the Eureka football team Reagan's senior year and one of the two black players on the team. In 1931 on the way from Eureka to play a game at Elmhurst, the team stopped at a hotel that refused to give the black players a room. Since Dixon was 15 miles away, Reagan offered to take Burghardt and Jim Rattan, the other player home with him. He told the black players that there just wasn't enough room in the hotel. Though they weren't fooled, they were impressed with Reagan. Burghardt graduated and went on to play semipro baseball and basketball, earned his master's and doctorate degrees and became the head of the Physical Education departments at Morgan and Bowie State Universities before retiring in 1979. Burghardt and Reagan continued their friendship until he died on August 8, 1981.
