Silent
Sam
Silent Sam stands in the Upper Quad of North Campus in memory
of students who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil
War. It was given by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in
1909. Silent Sam is silent because he carries no ammunition and
cannot fire his gun. He has also been used as a gathering place
for discussions about race relations on campus.
