"He used so much creativity and ingenuity to get there," Freeman said.
The young filmmaker used some ingenuity himself, writing his script during the five days he spent at UNC Hospitals as a research subject, for which he earned $600 and got room and board.  In making his current film, Freeman incorporates Rodriguez's cost-cutting idea of using a wheelchair as a dolly for moving shots. Freeman sits in the wheelchair and holds the camera as steady as he can while someone pushes the wheelchair.
Freeman also has learned that chocolate syrup and red dye look like real blood and how to make it squirt out of someone's shirt.

An early interest

From Fuquay-Varina, Freeman said his interest in filmmaking was sparked his senior year at
the N.C. School of Science & Mathematics, when he and five guys made a 45-minute video as their senior project.
He continued his interest at UNC when the Carolina ProductionGuild, a university-based filmmaking society, funded his 10-minute film "Curious George," made during his freshman year. The film, which follows a $1 bill, was shown at Chapel Hill's Hi Mom! Film Festival last year.
He co-produced "Shutter" his sophomore year and has worked on other films.
"Anytime I hear about something, I'm right on it," Freeman said. "I want to make films for the rest of my life."
"All making movies is is trying to replicate what you see in your head, come as close to putting your dreams on screen as you can. It's awesome," he said.
He hopes to have a local
premiere of his action film.
"When you think about something 24 hours a day, it can't help but be good. I dream about this thing," Freeman said. "When you do this enough, everything you see is in movie mode."
He's spent the summer focusing on the film, which he is producing and directing. Josh Betthauser shares directing duties, While Jackson Brown serves as an assistant director.
"It's going to be harder when school starts. I think it starts Aug. 21," Freeman said.
