Commentaria infra:

<In the areas of Hellenistic social and historical background
that impact lexicography, Thayer is wandering around in the dark.
One great example of the superiority of BDAG to Thayer is to
compare the articles on σκηνοποιός SKHNOPOIOS in the two
volumes.>

Here's the real question:  Was Paul an "awning maker" (Acts 18:3)
or was he a "yawning maker" Acts (20:9?)  :)

I agree BDAG 3 is better on this one than Thayer.  I bet BDAG 4
will be even better.

Guys (and guyettes), Thayer is just dated. If you have one of the Bauers,
though, Thayer can be interesting at times.

I once, as a college student, visited a backwater little Baptist church
(attending with my cousin, who was trying to set me up with her best
friend). I didn't know what to expect, but the pastor, a young man in his
early 20's, was desperately trying to get to Bible College and learn Greek.
He had progressed a bit on his own, and actually took Thayer with him up to
the pulpit!

I remember thinking it terribly funny (and a bit embarrassing) at the time,
but now I appreciate his zeal for knowledge and his attempt to improve
himself and his ministry.
