"And Let the Rest of the World Roll By"

"The thoughts of Arthur James Yettke, aviation boatswain's mate, third class, USN, are far from the realities of war as he catches a few winks while waiting for striking planes to return home. 'Home', for the present, is the escort carrier USS Rendova (CVE-114) now operating off the coast of Korea with the Marine 'Devilcats' Squadron."

    USS Toledo (CA-133)

"Being Prepared for the unexpected is expected of Navy corpsmen, such as those aboard the USS Toledo (CA-133). An unexpected case came aboard recently during heavy shelling operations off the North Korean coast, when a little oriental sparrow, obviously quite ill, came to rest on the heavy cruiser's open bridge. Without any question as to its political sentiments, corpsmen Leland B. Whitney, HM3, (right) ... and Bobby Pete West, SN, ... administered first aid - in the form of food and warmth - and released the patient. The blasting of Communist gun emplacements went on as before."
Photograph and caption were released by Commander Naval Forces, Far East, under date of 28 November 1952.

    "Japanese Fishhawk Sailor's Pet"

"Navy men around the world are famed for their selection of odd and assorted pets and mascots. Jimmy D. Clark, fireman, USN, ... acquired a Japanese fishhawk as a pet when the fierce looking little bird, apparently driven offshore by a heavy storm, landed aboard the hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) four days before reaching Japan ... Today, as the Consolation carries on its grimmer task of caring for UN wounded in Korea, the misplaced and much wounded fishhawk flops to and fro about the ship with one of its legs in a splint. Says Clark, 'We haven't decided on a name for him yet. No one knows how to say Little Pest in Japanese.'"
Photograph and caption released by Commander Naval Forces Far East, under date of 17 October 1951.
