EVENTS--Spanish-American War--
Battle of Manila Bay, 1 May 1898 --
Cavite Arsenal After the Battle

Cavite, the principal Spanish naval base in the Philippines, is located on the south side of Manila bay, several miles from Manila city. It was the scene of the 1 May naval battle, during which some of its buildings were damaged by shell fire. The U.S. Navy occupied Cavite a few days after the action, thereby gaining a vital facility to support its operations during the remaining months of the Spanish-American War. Renamed Cavite Navy Yard, it continued as a U.S. Navy base until the Second World War, and now serves the same purpose for the Philippine Navy.

This page features pictures of Cavite following the battle.

If higher resolution reproductions than these digital images are desired, see "How to Obtain Photographic Reproductions."
