Battle of the Coral Sea, May 1942


Flight deck damage on USS Lexington (CV-2), from a Japanese bomb that hit near the after end of the port forward 5-inch gun gallery, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 8 May 1942.
This hit was evaluated as being from a relatively small bomb, instantaneously fuzed.
Photographed from the carrier's island, with the flight deck palisade is at right, and the port forward corner of the forward aircraft elevator in the lower left.
