Kwajalein Operation, January-February 1944


Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Pacific Fleet commander, pays his respects at the Marine Corps cemetary on Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, while inspecting the newly-conquered island, 6 February 1944.
In the center, standing next to Adm. Nimitz, is Colonel Franklin A. Hart, USMC, commander of the 24th Regimental Combat Team, which took Namur. Next to Hart, wearing dark glasses, is Major General Harry Schmidt, Commanding General 4th Marine Division.
