Japanese Carrier Division Three under attack by U.S. Navy aircraft from Task Force 58, in the late afternoon of 20 June 1944. Anti-aircraft shell bursts are visible in the upper right.
Photographed from a USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) plane.
Heavy cruiser circling at right, nearest to the camera, is either Maya or Chokai. Beyond that, obscured by the flash from gunfire or a bomb, is the small aircraft carrier Chiyoda.
