Chalked inscription on the crown of the battleship's Turret Two: "You name it Boss, We'll hit it."
Photographed off the Normandy beachhead on 7 June 1944, the day after the Allies first landed there, assisted by Arkansas's gunfire. Written atop the turret's 12"/50 gun barrels are (left) "Hitler's" and (right) "Downfall".
Note: lookouts, with binoculars, by the rangefinder at right; crewmen's working jackets, with hoods; and men limbering up with a medicine ball beside Turret One, in the upper left.
