Surrender of Japan, 1945


U.S. Navy officers who landed at Atsugi airfield in the first combat aircraft, 29 August 1945.
Those present are (left to right):
Lieutenant Commander Don Thorburn;
Lieutenant Commander E.V. Wedell;
Interpreter S. Toda;
Lieutenant Commander John N. MacInnes;
Lieutenant W.V. Ballew and
Lieutenant Commander Cliff McDowell.
They are standing in front of what appears to be a Japanese Navy/Nakajima J1N1-R ("Irving") that is fitted with a 20mm gun turret.
