USS S-4 (SS-109)
Secretary of the Navy Curtis D. Wilbur (left center) inspecting
the submarine, soon after she was salvaged from the ocean off
Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she was sunk in a collision
with USCGC Paulding on 17 December 1927. Photographed
in dry dock at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts,
20 March 1928.
The Captain with Secretary Wilbur is probably James D. Willson,
Commander of the Receiving Ship at Boston. They are standing
on S-4's deck, just above the hole in her starboard hull
made by Paulding's prow. Rear Admiral Philip Andrews,
Navy Yard Commandant, was also present.
